Drain Cleaning FAQ
A few telltale signs: water draining slower than usual, gurgling sounds from sinks or toilets, recurring clogs in the same drain even after plunging, multiple drains backing up at the same time, or unpleasant odors coming from drains. Any of these suggest the clog is past what a plunger or chemical cleaner can handle and a mechanical cleaning is the right call. If you see sewage coming up through floor drains or tubs, stop using water and call us right away. That's a main line blockage.
In kitchens, the usual culprit is grease and food waste building up on the inside of the pipe over time. In bathrooms, it's almost always hair combined with soap scum. Main sewer lines often clog because of tree roots growing through joints, foreign objects flushed down a toilet, or "flushable" wipes (which are not actually flushable). In older cast iron lines, scale and rust build up on the pipe walls and narrow the opening until it catches everything.
Most over-the-counter chemical drain cleaners contain harsh acids or caustics that can corrode older metal pipes, eat away at PVC joint seals, and damage rubber gaskets, especially with repeated use. They also rarely solve the underlying problem; once the clog reforms (often within weeks), you've spent money on chemicals and still need a real fix. We recommend skipping the chemicals entirely. A mechanical drain cleaning removes the actual blockage, and we'll tell you what likely caused it so you can prevent the next clog rather than mask it.
Over the years, drain lines build up layers of grease, soap scum, and, in older cast iron pipes, hard scale and rust on the inside walls. That narrowed, rough pipe catches everything that goes down it, so clogs keep coming back no matter how often the line is snaked. Our specialized descaling machine scrubs the pipe walls clean, removing grease buildup, soap scum buildup, and the scale in rusted-out pipes, to restore the pipe close to its full opening for better flow and fewer repeat clogs.
Most single-drain clogs like a kitchen sink, bathtub, or bathroom sink are cleared in 30 to 60 minutes. Main sewer line cleanings usually take one to two hours depending on access and how stubborn the blockage is. Descaling a cast iron line takes longer and depends on the length and condition of the pipe. We'll give you a clear time estimate before we start so there are no surprises.
Yes. Our large drain machine is built for main sewer lines and handles full-house backups, tree-root intrusion, and heavy buildup. We run the right cable and cutter for the job to clear it. If what comes back on the cable points to pipe damage, we'll give you honest recommendations on next steps.
Most homes never need routine drain cleaning. If your drains are flowing fine, there's no reason to snake them. Just call us when there's a problem. Yearly maintenance only makes sense in two situations: homes with tree roots growing into the line where the owner chooses to keep cabling it instead of repairing it, and commercial kitchens where grease from cooking builds up in the drains. Not sure which applies to you? We'll give you an honest answer.
